Barbara Kruger got her start in the literary world with her first job at Condé Nast Publications in 1966. She worked as a graphic designer, art director and picture editor at various publications until 1969 when she took up art making using a wide variety of materials traditionally associated with craft as a nod to the feminist agenda of acknowledging historically overlooked art by women. It wasn’t until 1977 when she took up photography and in 1979 focused on found images to create collages that represented messages of gender and politics. She developed an aesthetic to call her own and blurred the lines between commerce, advertising and artwork through her pieces.
